Jun 16, 2025

Summary: Chen Litian, male, is the Director of the Transplant Surgery Department and Chief Surgeon at Xinhua Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. From January 2004 to August 2008, he participated in 1,600 liver extractions. Xinhua Hospital is one of the first medical institutions in China to obtain qualifications for liver organ transplants. A WOIPFG telephone investigation revealed a high number of transplants, abundant liver sources, short waiting times, multiple teams, and the use of organs from Falun Gong practitioners.

In view of the broader background of the Chinese Communist Party's state crime of organ harvesting from living Falun Gong practitioners, since Xinhua Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine has been allegedly involved in the crime, Chen Litian, the director of the hospital's Transplant Surgery Department, is a major suspect.

Chen Litian, male, is the Director of the Transplant Surgery Department, Chief Surgeon, and Associate Professor at Xinhua Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. He is also a member of the Organ Transplantation Branch of the Chinese Medical Association. He has long been engaged in the clinical practice, teaching, and research of liver transplantation[1]. From January 2004 to August 2008, he participated in 1,600 liver extractions[2]. From January 1999 to February 2005, he participated in over 1,500 liver transplants at the Oriental Organ Transplant Center of the First Central Hospital of Tianjin[3].

Xinhua Hospital is one of the first medical institutions in China to obtain qualifications for performing liver organ transplants. It has conducted various types of liver transplant surgeries, including orthotopic non-shunted liver transplantation, piggyback liver transplantation, pediatric living-donor liver transplantation, and reduced-size liver transplantation. Currently, adult liver transplantation, pediatric living-donor liver transplantation, reduced-size liver transplantation, and split liver transplantation have become routine procedures[4].

Director Chen Litian: “You bring me your files and let me take a look first, alright? The thing you just said is nonsense! Who can use those of Falun Gong practitioners?  We only use state-sanctioned---normally donated organs.” … “(What your former classmate said is) impossible! I have never used that kind (of organs).” ... “We are a legitimate hospital and do not do those things!” ... “I have never heard of anyone donating Falun Gong people’s organs in this entire country. We do not have any livers from Falun Gong practitioners, and we do not have that kind of donors, so stop spouting nonsense! He was just making things up! Bullshit! Totally insane! None of us would use that kind of organs (from Falun Gong practitioners). Throughout the entire People’s Republican of China, the whole country, nationwide, nobody uses that kind of organs (from Falun Gong practitioners). He is totally nuts and out of his mind!”

Investigation Respondent: Dr. Zhao Shuai, Department of Liver Transplantation, Xinhua Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine

Investigation Date: February 23, 2023 (Tel:+86 13482257875)

Summary:

1. “Based on past experience, I estimate that (the wait time for a surgery) may take two months.”

2. “The total cost is about 700,000 to 800,000 yuan, and that includes the liver source and medical expenses.”

3. “The vast majority of organs in Shanghai are brought in from other places. This is because roughly over 1,000 liver transplants are performed in Shanghai every year, but only around 100 organs are donated in Shanghai each year, so there is a gap of approximately 1,000 organs that needs to be filled with organs from other places.”
