Wu Mengchao is the president of the Eastern Hepatobiliary Surgery Hospital. He is a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and was once the chief advisor of the Military Organ Transplantation Convention. He was honored by the Chinese communist government as the “Father of Hepatobiliary Surgery in China”. He also served as the deputy specialist group head of the PLA Department of General Logistics, and deputy chief commissioner of the Committee of Medical Sciences and Technology of the PLA. [2] Former CCP leader Jiang Zemin had met with Wu Mengchao five times[3]. Jiang also signed a decree ordering the CCP Military Commission to hold a special ceremony awarding Wu the “Model Medical Specialist” title as well as the “First Grade Hero’s Medal”, and Year 2006’s Highest Scientific Achievement Award.

All media reports regarding the number of liver transplantation surgeries performed by Wu Mengchao has been redacted from China’s Internet. According to Minghui.org, up to 2010, Wu had personally completed over 4,000 cases of liver transplantation[4]. On May 11, 2011, Wu Mengchao claimed that “In terms of surgery number, we have been doing the most in the world with relatively good quality and effectiveness; we have already caught up with international standards.”[5] There were 742 beds in Wu’s hospital. A sector walk through on its website showed that, of the 11 surgery sectors, at least 7 were dedicated to carrying out liver transplants[6]. Very high workloads had pushed the hospital to establish a new branch with 1500 beds[7].
