WOIPFG’s Investigative Report on the Alleged Organ Harvesting of Living Falun Gong Practitioners at Zhujiang Hospital of Southern Medical University and Its Staff Members Suspected of Participation

Oct24, 2023

Address: Mid-253 Industrial Avenue, Guangzhou, Guangdong, China

Preface

Zhujiang Hospital of Southern Medical University (formerly known as the Second Affiliated Hospital of the First Military Medical University of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)), was recognized as the first batch of the third-level first-class hospitals in the military in 1994.
It is one of the main hospitals where the CCP military live-harvested the organs of Falun Gong practitioners[1]. It is one of the major transplant centers in the country, with a strong kidney transplant team, a large number of transplantations, and a short waiting time for organs.

I. Hospital Overview

the First Military Medical University) was recognized by the CCP military in 1994 as the first batch of military third-level first-class hospitals. It was transferred to Guangdong Province in August 2004 along with the First Military Medical University as a whole unit. After years of development, Zhujiang Hospital has now become a comprehensive hospital integrating medical treatment, teaching and research. According to the official website of Zhujiang Hospital, the hospital has developed distinctive specialties in the field of organ transplantation (kidney, liver and pancreas transplantation), etc[2]. On May 23, 2007, it became one of the Ministry of Health of the CCP designated hospitals to carry out kidney transplantation[3]. The hospital was also ranked as Class A for kidney transplant, Class B for liver and heart transplant in Guangdong Province in 2004[4].

II. Organ Transplantation Center of Zhujiang Hospital is one of the important transplantation centers in China.

According to the public data on the official website of Zhujiang Hospital of Southern Medical University, its Organ Transplantation Center was authorized for doctoral degree for organ transplantation earlier in China, which consists of three parts of Organ Transplantation, Blood Purification Center, and Transplantation and Immunity Research Institute (including Tissue Matching laboratory). The medical area covers 2300 square meters[5]. The transplant center's webpage also shows that the Organ Transplantation Center of Zhujiang Hospital "is one of the important transplantation centers in the country, with cadaveric renal transplants, kinship renal transplants, liver transplants, and pancreas-kidney combined transplants[6]."

III. the hospital has a strong team of kidney transplantation doctors, which shows that the actual number of transplantations in the hospital is huge.
According to the public data on the official website of Zhujiang Hospital, there are 37 staff members in the Organ Transplantation Center of Zhujiang Hospital, including 2 professors, 4 associate professors, 2 associate chief technicians, 4 lecturers, among them, there are 5 PhDs, 4 masters, 1 returnee from oversea, 2 doctoral supervisors, 2 master's supervisors[7]. Two of them, Lin Minzhuan and Li Jie, have performed thousands of transplants.
Lin Minzhuan, male, associate chief physician, professor, Doctor of Medicine, has personally experienced nearly 2600 cases of kidney transplants, 25 cases of liver transplants, and 3 cases of combined pancreas/kidney transplants[8].

Lin Minzhuan is currently the vice chairman of the Organ Transplantation Branch of Guangzhou City Medical Association, the standing committee member of the Organ Transplantation Society of Guangdong Province Medical Association, a committee member of the Haizhu District of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), and a member of the Editorial Board of the “Chinese Journal of Medical Practice”. Graduated from the Institute of Organ Transplantation of Tongji Medical University with a doctorate degree in medicine. Has been the deputy director, associate professor, associate chief physician, and master's supervisor of the Organ Transplantation Department of Zhujiang Hospital of Southern Medical University since 1997; has been engaged in the clinical, teaching, and scientific research of blood purification and renal transplantation for more than 20 years. Personally experienced nearly 2600 cases of renal transplantation, 25 cases of liver transplantation, and 3 cases of combined pancreas/kidney transplantation[9].

Li Jie is the director of urology and chief physician of Organ Transplantation Department, Taiping People's Hospital, Dongguan, Guangdong. He has been engaged in urology and organ transplantation for 20 years. Worked in Zhujiang Hospital, a third-level first-class teaching hospital in Guangzhou, for more than 10 years. Participated in more than 4,000 cases of kidney transplantation, and was the chief surgeon for more than 500 cases of kidney transplantation; participated in more than 50 cases of liver transplantation, and was the chief surgeon for 12 cases[10].

IV. the telephone investigation shows that the hospital has a large number of transplants, a large number of beds, and multiple kidney transplant teams.

Investigation Subject: Zhou Song, Chief Nephrologist of Transplantation Department, Zhujiang Hospital, Southern Medical University [11]

Investigation time: November 8, 2019 (Phone #+86-20-62782501)
Summary of the Investigation:

1. (Compare with Southern Hospital) Our hospital is doing well, we have more beds here, more than 60. When the source of kidneys comes, it sometimes comes very hard (large number), for example, during the National holidays we have done a lot of cases! We've done a hundred or two hundred! That can be done, used to do more than 300 cases before, in one year.

2, Zhao Ming is our director, I am in the team of Director Guo Ying. We have a total of three teams.

3, we can only evaluate that it is a qualified kidney, and can not say that is the kidney of a Falun Gong patient. ...... You come over and find out, OK? You can find someone at a higher level to understand. It's better to communicate face to face, we can talk about something face to face, not too much to say over the phone.

V. The hospital is the main hospital of the CCP military for the live organ harvesting of Falun Gong practitioners[12].

According to Bai Shuzong, Minister of Health of the General Logistics Department of the People's Liberation Army (PLA), this hospital should be the main hospital in which the CCP military actively harvests the organs of Falun Gong practitioners[13].

Bai Shuzhong, who served as the Minister of Health of the PLA General Logistics Department from 1998 to 2004, directly admitted in a telephone investigation conducted by WOIPFG that during his tenure, that Jiang Zemin personally ordered the live organ harvesting of Falun Gong practitioners, and that the Hospital Affiliated to the University of Military Medical Sciences was the main hospital in the military system that carried out this order from Jiang Zemin[14].

On September 30, 2014, the investigator in the name of Bo Xilai's project team, called CCP Major General Bai Shuzhong for evidence.

(Recording 2 download: MP3, manuscript for details: pdf16)

Bai Shuzhong: Served as the Minister of Health of the General Logistics Department of the CCP Army from 1998 to 2004, which was the peak period of the CCP’s persecution of Falun Gong and the live organ harvesting of Falun Gong practitioners; the army was the main body of the live organ harvesting, and as the highest medical administrative leader of the army's health system, he should have been one of those who were the most aware of the situation at that time.

Investigator: "When you were the Minister of Health of the General Logistics Department, was the matter of harvesting the organs of detained Falun Gong practitioners for organ transplants a task laid out by Wang Ke, the then Minister of the General Logistics Department? Or was it a direct order from the Military Commission?
Bai Shuzhong: "At that time it was President Jiang, ah, who had an instruction, that is to say, saying that carrying out these things, that is, organ transplants, I should say, that is, kidney transplants were carried out not only on the side of the military. "

Investigator: "We also got some information that said that at that time, the JCS was also responsible for holding a group of organ donors from Falun Gong detainees, wasn't it?
Bai Shuzhong: "As far as I can remember, at that time, after President Jiang's instructions, everyone did a lot of work against Falun Gong. Because at that time Jiang paid attention to this issue, paid a lot of attention to this issue. "

The recording clearly shows that the use of Falun Gong practitioners' organs as transplant donors was a direct order from Jiang Zemin, and the military was not the only system that involved in organ transplants.

This evidence corroborates the large number of facts previously obtained by WOIPFG nation-wide from the military, armed police, localities, and judicial systems that are involved in the live organ harvesting of Falun Gong; explains the reasons for the nation's multi-system live organ harvesting of Falun Gong; and confirms our judgment according to the evidence obtained in the past.
